Over the past twenty-seven years, the SCYP has earned the reputation as offering outstanding musical ensembles and serving as a positive contribution to the Southern California community. Members of the ensembles are committed to upholding the highest standards possible. The purpose of these standards is to consistently present the orchestra in a professional manner while providing an enjoyable experience for all. Failure to abide by these standards may result in dismissal from the orchestras.
REHEARSAL STANDARDS
► The success and enjoyment of any ensemble is determined in large by the conscientious participation of its members. Each orchestra member is allowed four absences from rehearsal, regardless of the reason. More than four absences may result in dismissal from the orchestra. If you miss more than two rehearsals during the preparation period for a concert, you may not be allowed to perform for that concert. Extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.
► All absences, regardless of the cause, must be approved prior to the morning of the rehearsal. (Extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.) Notify the conductor of your ensemble of your absence in advance by sending a message to their email address noted on our website. If your absence is due to a last minute circumstance on the evening prior, or on the morning of the rehearsal or performance, please leave a message on the SCYP Hotline at (714) 692-0909.
► Know your music!! Please don't waste the time of other orchestra members by expecting to "practice" your part at rehearsal. Our purpose is to rehearse and make music. Be Prepared! If you are having trouble with a passage, ask your private teacher or the ensemble conductors for assistance.
► Concentrate! Even when you are not playing you should be concentrating on the music. Often, comments directed to one section will also pertain to you. Repetition of these comments is a waste of valuable rehearsal time. Talking, doing your homework, etc., not only disrupts your concentration, it is also very distracting to your fellow musicians and is not allowed.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
► Concentrate! Keep your mind alert at all times.
► Performances are both an aural and visual experience. You are performing from the moment you come on stage until you exit. Be still during all rests and don't talk to anyone. Any movement is very distracting to other orchestra members and the audience.
► Keep your music stand up and your eyes on the conductor as much as possible. This person is in the best position to keep the performance together. The conductor will not only communicate expression and tempo, but will also help you find your place in the event you get lost. This can only be accomplished through personal eye contact.
► Enjoy! Individuals come together from all areas of Southern California to make new friends and share in the joy of MAKING MUSIC!!
SEATING PLACEMENT POLICY
Congratulations on your acceptance to the SCYP!
We are pleased that you will be joining 170 of Southern Californias most outstanding musicians in the rehearsal and performance of some of the worlds greatest music. Your acceptance to the SCYP is indicative of your talent as a musician and your determination to be the best you can be!!
Due to the high caliber of musicianship, we are fortunate to offer a variety of unique ensemble experiences. Each member has been placed in the ensemble that will be most beneficial to his or her musical and social development.
Ranking by ability is not of primary concern.
Part assignments and chair placement will be arranged for optimum balance of sound as determined by the conductors. If necessary, sections will be heard individually to adjust seating accordingly. In some instances, seat rotation will be implemented. Auditions for principal seating will be held at the first workshop.
Each member of the SCYP will be assigned a music folder. Damage to individual parts will be assessed according to replacement cost. Please carry your music and a pencil in your folder at all times.
Marking of parts with a pen is not allowed. Rehearsal schedules will be distributed on a regular basis
which will enable you to prepare in advance for each rehearsal.
GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDANCE
As a member of the Southern California Youth Philharmonic, musicians are required to attend all rehearsals, workshops, and concerts. We realize that there may be instances when illness or other important events conflict with our schedule.
In the event of an unavoidable absence, musicians are required to follow the procedures outlined below:
Each musician is expected to inform his or her conductor of an anticipated absence as early as possible. Be prepared to discuss:
Date and times of the absence
Reason for the absence.
Possible solutions and compromises to minimize the length of
the absence, or to avoid it altogether.
With unavoidable school conflicts, a legitimate manner of verification should be presented at the following rehearsal.
Musicians are encouraged to use the convenient memo form available online to contact the appropriate staff member:
